Happy Saturday!
We hope to bring to you random tips for you to become a more savvy iPhone user. According to cnet.com, over 51 percent of smartphones owned by users in the US are iPhones. If technology is not your strong suit, don't fear, we bring you quick solutions, suggestions, and opinions about how to use your iPhone more effectively.
Today's tip:
If your Location Services apps aren't functioning correctly, (your location isn't being updated) or your camera-based apps (not including Skype) keep crashing after you take a picture...
Restart your phone.
"Have you tried turning it off and on again?" No joke, restarting your phone will clear the phone's temporary memory, a simple action that can solve many problems. It really does work sometimes.
After a slight mishap between my iPhone and some ice cream, my lock button is stuck so I can't turn my phone off and on anymore. However, I let my phone die and later plugged it in to charge. Once the battery charged some, it came back on (and, in essence, rebooted) and my Location Services and Camera worked perfectly.
About Location Services:
To find a list of the Apps on your phone that use Location Services, go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services. Some of the ones on mine include:
Apple Maps
Compass
Google Maps
Facebook
Instagram
Twitter
The Weather Channel
Twist
Yelp
Urbanspoon
etc...
Also weird ones such as
Fruit Ninja
Forever 21
Apps will prompt Location Services to be turned on if you request something that needs to access your current location. If that doesn't make much sense then here's an example:
If you want to know where the nearest Forever 21 is, your Forever 21 app may request access to Location Services to check your location and find the nearest store near you. Sometimes you may get weird requests from apps like Flashlight, which you can promptly decline. If you aren't sure, you can decline them and then add them later in the Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services menu.
Some of you may not care which apps gain access to your phone's GPS but keep in mind that the apps that you do allow Location Services access *could* theoretically see your phone's (and probably your) location at any time. When this is happening, you will see a purple arrow in the upper-right-hand corner of your phone as opposed to a gray arrow or no arrow at all.
Also, possibly more importantly, Location Services suck the life out of your phone. If you are really pressed for battery life, turning off Location Services temporarily does wonders.
Too much reading?
Here's a summary:
1. Location-based apps not working? Restart your phone.
2. Camera-based apps not working? Restart your phone.
3. Afraid of big brother? Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services to enable/disable apps from accessing your location.
4. Battery issues? Disable some of your apps from connecting to Location Services or turn Location Services off completely.

We hope to see more iPhone users see their phones as 'smart' instead of frustrating. Comment on this post if these tips helped you!
